GAZA CITY – At least 27 Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded when Israeli forces opened fire on crowds awaiting humanitarian aid in Gaza City on Thursday, according to local health officials. The attack occurred near the Kuwaiti Roundabout, a known aid distribution point, as famine warnings escalate across the besieged territory.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as trucks delivered flour and canned goods. “They fired indiscriminately at starving people,” said paramedic Khaled al-Saifi. The Israeli military claimed troops responded to “threatening movements,” but offered no evidence of weapons among civilians.
Simultaneously, outrage erupted after Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound under heavy police guard. The far-right leader declared Israel’s “sovereignty” over the flashpoint site, violating long-standing agreements prohibiting political provocations there. Palestinian factions condemned the visit as a “blatant assault” on Muslim holy sites, sparking protests across the occupied West Bank.
The incidents come amid stalled ceasefire talks and intensified strikes in Rafah, where over 1.4 million displaced Gazans face catastrophic food shortages. UN agencies warn that famine is “imminent” as Israel continues restricting aid access.
