TATAU – A temporary evacuation centre has been established at the Kampung Dagang Multipurpose Hall to assist residents displaced by a fire that engulfed the Seberang Pasar Lama area on Monday morning. The blaze destroyed 19 homes, rendering 87 individuals homeless.
According to Tatau District Officer Calvin Ligong, the fire occurred around 10 a.m. in the informal settlement.
Five affected families have been relocated to the evacuation centre, while others have sought shelter with relatives or returned to their longhouses.
Ligong commended the rapid response and coordination demonstrated by the Tatau District Disaster Committee, which included personnel from the Tatau Police District Headquarters (IPD), the Fire and Rescue Department, and other key agencies.
He also acknowledged the support from donors and the medical team from Tatau Health Clinic, which provided health screenings at the centre.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The district office continues to monitor the situation and coordinate aid for the victims.
