MIRI – The 3rd Borneo Diabetes Conference 2025 convened over 400 healthcare professionals, researchers, and advocates at the Imperial Hotel from September 19-21, highlighting regional collaboration in addressing diabetes and obesity.
Organized by the Diabetes Malaysia Miri District Branch and supported by Business Events Sarawak, Miri Hospital, and national health bodies, the event centred on the theme “Revolutionizing Diabetes Care: Innovations, Challenges, and Opportunities”.
Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Sarawak Minister of Transport, inaugurated the conference, emphasizing the state’s commitment to healthcare advancement and infrastructure development, including upgrades to Miri Hospital as a northern Sarawak medical hub.
He noted that hosting international events aligns with Sarawak’s economic and tourism growth goals while reinforcing partnerships across ASEAN nations.
Sessions explored cutting-edge topics like AI-driven diabetes management, health disparities, and workplace interventions, led by experts including Prof. Dato’ Paduka Dr. Mafauzy Mohamed (USM) and Prof. Dr. Ronald C.W. Ma (Chinese University of Hong Kong).
The conference also addressed practical strategies for diabetic foot ulcer treatment and personalized care approaches.
This gathering underscores Sarawak’s broader healthcare initiatives, such as the RM289.2 million Miri Hospital expansion adding 328 beds and the state’s free tertiary education scheme for medical fields, targeting underserved communities.
