MIRI, SARAWAK: A three-storey commercial building on Jalan Bendahara here was engulfed in flames in the early hours of Monday, but thankfully, no injuries were reported.
According to a spokesperson from the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) Sarawak Operations Centre (PGO), the emergency call was received at 4.37 am. Teams from the Miri Fire and Rescue Station (BBP), with support from Lopeng BBP, were immediately dispatched to the scene.
“Upon arrival, we discovered that the fire involved a building measuring approximately 20 by 40 square feet,” the spokesperson said. “The ground floor suffered 15 percent burn damage, the first floor 45 percent, the second floor 20 percent, and the third floor five percent.”
The firefighting operation was led by PBK II Stanley Paul, who coordinated 11 personnel and three fire engines. Water for the operation was sourced from a nearby fire hydrant, ensuring the blaze was fully contained. The fire was successfully extinguished at 7.31 am.
The authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported. Assistance at the site also came from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and SESCO, helping to secure the area and manage electricity supply disruptions.
While the exact cause of the fire is under investigation, preliminary reports indicate that the building was unoccupied at the time of the incident, preventing any potential injuries. Residents in the vicinity were advised to remain cautious due to smoke and possible structural hazards.
Incidents like this highlight the importance of fire safety awareness and preparedness, especially in busy commercial districts. JBPM Sarawak has urged building owners to ensure functioning fire alarms, hydrants, and emergency exits to prevent potential tragedies.
