KUCHING – Sarawakian middle-distance runner Danial Hakim Mohammed Omar secured a silver medal in the men’s 1,500m race at the Borneo Games Kuching (BGK) 2025, narrowly missing out on gold by just one second.

The tense final, held at the State Stadium on Thursday, saw Danial clock 04:12, just behind Akhbar Tanjung of East Kalimantan, who clinched the gold with a time of 04:11. Mohammiod Arif Zulkifli of Brunei took bronze after finishing in 04:14.

In the women’s category, Clezendra Chanda added to Sarawak’s medal tally with a bronze, completing the race in 05:09. The event was won by Nefriana Ariance Daik of East Kalimantan at 04:53, while Hizillawanty Jamain of Sabah secured silver with 04:56.

The achievements of Danial and Clezendra have been viewed as a positive sign for Sarawak’s athletics squad, with both athletes praised for their determination and ability to challenge strong rivals from neighbouring states and territories.

Officials noted that these results provided a boost to the Sarawak contingent, which continues to push for more medals in athletics and field sports as the Games move toward their weekend highlights.

The performances also highlight the potential of Sarawak’s emerging athletes, underscoring the state’s ongoing commitment to developing competitive talent at the regional level.
