KAJANG – A 12-month-old baby boy was killed while eight others were injured in a four-vehicle accident at the Bukit Kajang Toll Plaza on Saturday.
The tragic incident involved a three-tonne lorry carrying scrap items, a four-wheel drive Nissan X-Trail belonging to the Public Works Department (JKR), a Honda City, and a Proton X70.
Assistant Director of the Operations Division of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Selangor, Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, said they received an emergency call at 11am.
“A total of six firefighters from the Bangi Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) were deployed to the scene immediately. We arrived at the location about 11 minutes later,” he said in a statement.
Upon arrival, rescuers found a baby boy pinned under the JKR Nissan X-Trail. Despite their swift efforts, the baby was confirmed dead at 11.30am by Ministry of Health (KKM) personnel.
Ahmad Mukhlis added that a man who was also trapped under the same vehicle was successfully pulled out 10 minutes earlier. He was rushed to hospital for treatment.
“Seven other victims with injuries had already been sent to hospital by KKM’s medical team before the fire brigade reached the scene,” he explained.
The accident caused heavy traffic congestion in the area as emergency personnel worked to rescue victims and clear the wreckage. The authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.
The baby’s remains were handed over to the police for further action, while the injured victims are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.
This incident has once again raised concerns about road safety at toll plazas, where heavy vehicles and cars converge in close proximity.
