Sarawak To Showcase Green Energy And Tech At ASEAN

KUCHING – Sarawak is eager to present its significant advancements in sustainable power and technology at the forthcoming 47th ASEAN Summit, scheduled for 27 October.

The state’s achievements in these pivotal sectors will be highlighted on the regional stage following a specific request from the federal government.

The Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, revealed that the national Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, had personally asked for the state to share its developmental experiences.

The focus will be on clean energy and semiconductors, both identified as fundamental components of the modern economic landscape.

He made these statements while addressing the press after the opening ceremony of the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak 2025 (IDECS25). The event was held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

The Premier elaborated that these sectors are integral to what is termed the ‘new economy’, with artificial intelligence acting as a primary catalyst for wider economic progress.

The integration of AI technology with semiconductor development is a key part of Sarawak’s strategy. The Premier noted that the state has been concurrently utilising AI and semiconductor components, observing that the effectiveness of AI is inherently dependent on the capability of the underlying processor.

This synergistic approach has led to local initiatives, including the creation of its own proprietary chip design known as KETEQ.AI.

The invitation to address the regional gathering is seen as a recognition of Sarawak’s pioneering efforts in these complex and capital-intensive fields. By sharing its journey, the state aims to provide a valuable case study for other ASEAN members looking to diversify their economies and embrace high-technology industries.

Commenting on the wider geopolitical context of the summit, the Premier also touched upon the confirmed attendance of United States President Donald Trump.

He expressed hope that the American leader’s presence would lead to a more nuanced comprehension of the Asia-Pacific region’s political and economic dynamics.

He acknowledged that the international investment climate has experienced some disruption following the implementation of tariff policies by the Trump administration.

These measures have had a tangible impact on regional trade and investment flows, creating challenges for economic planners.

In light of this, the Premier voiced his expectation that fellow ASEAN leaders would engage in prudent and constructive dialogue to navigate the economic difficulties precipitated by these tariff policies.

The summit provides a critical platform for such discussions, aiming to foster stability and continued growth within the bloc amidst global trade uncertainties.

Sarawak’s presentation will therefore contribute to broader conversations about economic resilience and technological sovereignty in Southeast Asia.
