SIBU – The 10th Convocation Ceremony of Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) was held on 8 November at the Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor Hall, officiated by His Excellency Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, Governor of Sarawak and Chancellor of UTS.
Accompanying His Excellency was Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi, alongside YB Datuk Dr. Abdul Rahman bin Junaidi, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, and his wife Datin Siti Shorgayah binti Ahmad Zaidin.
The delegation was warmly welcomed by YB Datuk Dr. Annuar Rapaee, Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak, Emeritus Prof. Dr. Khairuddin Ab. Hamid, Vice-Chancellor of UTS, and other dignitaries.
The ceremony commenced with the Chancellor’s Parade, followed by the formal declaration of the 10th Convocation, symbolically officiated by the Governor.
A highlight of the event was the conferment of the title Professor Emeritus to Dato’ Dr. Abdul Hakim Juri, former Vice-Chancellor of UTS, in recognition of his significant contributions to academia and the university’s growth.
During the proceedings, Tun Pehin Sri presented degrees to 42 Master’s graduates and 107 Bachelor’s graduates, including a Posthumous Bachelor’s Award to honour students who had completed their studies but passed away before graduation.
The ceremony also celebrated outstanding achievements, with the Chancellor’s Award presented to Mr. Bernard Kieu Boon Chee and the Academic Award conferred upon three graduates who excelled throughout their studies. These awards underscored UTS’s commitment to recognising excellence and nurturing talent.
In his address, Tun Pehin Sri expressed deep appreciation to the university’s management, lecturers and all those involved in organising the convocation.
He commended their dedication, which he said reflected the institution’s pursuit of educational excellence. His Excellency also congratulated the graduates, urging them to uphold the good name of UTS and contribute positively to society and the nation.
“May success always accompany you all,” he concluded, offering encouragement for the graduates as they embark on their professional journeys.
The convocation marked another milestone in UTS’s development as a leading institution in Sarawak, reinforcing its role in producing graduates equipped to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving world.
