‘Kumang Keling’ Musical Revives Iban Folklore on Sarawak Stage

KUCHING – The Panggung Seni Tradisional 2025 series brought Iban folklore vividly to life with the staging of Teater Muzikal Kumang Keling at the Auditorium Toh Puan Hajah Norkiah, Sekolah Seni Malaysia Sarawak (SSeMS) on Saturday evening.

The production, written by Mohd Asri Ibrahim and directed by Tini Tyrani Adurahman, was presented by the Department of National Culture and Arts (JKKN) Sarawak in collaboration with the Sarawak Cultural Village and Pertubuhan Teater Sanggar Kreatif Kuching. It was further supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak.

Among the distinguished guests was Datuk Abdullah Saidol, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS), who joined the audience in witnessing the musical’s celebration of Sarawak’s cultural heritage.

The story of Kumang and Keling unfolded through a dynamic mix of traditional dance, music, and dramatic performance. Kumang was portrayed as more than a romantic figure; she embodied the role of cultural guardian, particularly of the pua kumbu woven tapestry, a symbol of resilience and pride in Iban tradition.

Keling’s journey, meanwhile, highlighted courage and sincerity. His determination to overcome challenges reflected themes of loyalty and perseverance, resonating strongly with the audience.

The musical’s choreography and evocative score drew spectators into a world of artistry and emotion, exploring universal values of devotion, bravery, and mutual respect.

The creative staging demonstrated how folklore can transcend generations, offering lessons that remain relevant today.

The cast featured Anding Indrawani, Lorna Lamban Walter, Azam Pitt, and Ricky Raca Kimwah, whose performances showcased the growing sophistication of Sarawak’s theatre scene.

Their portrayal of legendary characters added depth and authenticity to the production, reinforcing the importance of storytelling in preserving cultural identity.

As part of JKKN’s Panggung Seni Tradisional initiative, the musical underscored ongoing efforts to safeguard Malaysia’s traditional performing arts.

By presenting Iban legends in a modern theatrical format, the organisers aim to ensure that Sarawak’s rich cultural narratives continue to inspire future generations.

The evening’s performance was not only a tribute to Iban heritage, but also a reminder of the role of the arts in strengthening community bonds and promoting cultural understanding.
