BINTULU – Malaysia LNG Group (MLNG), a subsidiary of PETRONAS, has stepped forward to provide emergency assistance to families affected by the recent longhouse fire at Sungai Semanok, Jalan Pesisir Jepak–Kuala Tatau.
On Tuesday, MLNG distributed essential supplies to 20 household heads, representing 104 individuals who lost their homes in the blaze last Monday.
The relief items included cooking utensils, stoves, gas cylinders, dry food, mineral water and bottled drinks, aimed at easing the immediate burden faced by the displaced families.
The handover ceremony was attended by Jepak State Assemblyman Iskandar Turkee, alongside Tatau District Officer Calvin Ligong Bujang @ Endawie.
Officials from the Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA), Civil Defence Force (APAM) and Volunteers Department (RELA) were also present, reflecting the collaborative effort between government agencies and industry players.
Speaking at the event, Iskandar emphasised that the contribution symbolised solidarity and compassion for the affected community.
“This contribution may seem modest, but it means a lot to the family who is trying to get back on their feet after losing their shelter,” he remarked.
He further expressed gratitude to MLNG and the supporting agencies, noting that such initiatives strengthen community resilience.
Iskandar also highlighted the importance of collective responsibility, stating: “Hopefully this spirit of ‘bearing the burden together, carrying the light together’ will continue to be our culture. We take care of our community because it is this togetherness that makes Bintulu strong and united.”
The distribution was overseen by MLNG General Manager Khairul Ariffin Idris, together with PETRONAS Manager Araffie Igat and Tuai Rumah James Kalip, the longhouse chief.
Their presence underscored the commitment of both corporate and local leadership in supporting recovery efforts.
The fire at James Kalip’s longhouse left dozens without shelter, prompting swift intervention from local authorities and community organisations.
Relief efforts such as MLNG’s contribution are part of a broader response to ensure victims receive immediate support while longer-term rebuilding plans are considered.
Community leaders have stressed that beyond material aid, the incident highlights the need for continued cooperation between industry, government and civil society in disaster preparedness and recovery.
The assistance provided by MLNG is seen as a vital step in helping families regain stability after the sudden loss of their homes.
As recovery continues, the affected families are expected to receive further support from state agencies and local organisations, ensuring that no household is left behind in the rebuilding process.
