KUCHING – The dedication and service of Assistant Medical Officers (AMOs) at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) were recognised during an appreciation dinner hosted by the Sarawak Assistant Medical Officers Association (SAMOA) at Theatre Hotel Kuching.
The event highlighted the vital role AMOs play in patient care, with Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, describing them as “steady hands” and “unsung heroes” of the healthcare system.
His speech, delivered on his behalf by Padawan Municipal Council Chairman Councillor Tan Kai, underscored the importance of the AMO designation, which was formally recognised in 2007.
Dr Sim noted that the responsibilities of AMOs have expanded significantly over the years. Their duties now include managing basic medical equipment, recording patient information, and supporting nurses and doctors across multiple services.
“AMOs are often the first to assist a patient and the last to be by their side. This is care at its most human,” he said.
He reaffirmed the Ministry of Health’s declaration of 1 November as Hari Pembantu Perawatan Kesihatan, introduced in 2022, as a formal recognition of their essential role in healthcare delivery.
He added that as Sarawak continues to modernise its healthcare infrastructure, the profession offers clear opportunities for training, career growth, and progression.
“I encourage each of you to keep building your knowledge, your skills and your confidence. Your role is equally essential as nurses, medical assistants and doctors,” Dr Sim stressed, urging AMOs to continue serving with pride and purpose.
The appreciation dinner brought together SGH personnel in a celebration of resilience and commitment. The gathering was dedicated to acknowledging the sacrifices and contributions of AMOs, who form an integral part of Sarawak’s healthcare workforce.
Among those present were SGH Hospital Director Dr Ngian Hie Ung, Deputy Hospital Directors Dr Alex Kim Ren Jye, Dr Norinawaty Abang Daud, and Wan Samsulri Wan Hasbi, alongside State Head of Assistant Medical Officer for Sarawak Samsuri Md Isa, SGH Head of Assistant Medical Officer Othman Bujang, and SGH Head of Matron Siswanita Main.
The event served not only as a tribute to AMOs, but also as a reminder of their indispensable role in ensuring patient welfare and strengthening Sarawak’s healthcare services.
