LIMBANG – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak has stepped up enforcement efforts in the northern region with the ongoing Ops Gempur North Sarawak, aiming to strengthen road safety standards and ensure better compliance among heavy vehicle operators.
JPJ Sarawak Director, YBrs. Tuan Norizan bin Jili, conducted a field review today to observe the performance and effectiveness of the operation, which involved ground teams from JPJ and the specialised JPJ Miri Falcon Team. His visit underscored the department’s commitment to maintaining strict monitoring and firm enforcement across the state.
The operation placed strong emphasis on technical inspections, focusing mainly on lorry-type goods vehicles. These vehicles are known to pose higher risks on the road when not properly maintained, making technical compliance a top priority for JPJ.
During the inspection, officers ensured that all vehicles complied with safety regulations, including brake systems, lighting, tyres, and structural integrity. One of the main components highlighted was the Speed Limiter Device (SLD), which has become a mandatory safety feature for heavy vehicles in Malaysia.
JPJ teams also carried out advocacy sessions with drivers and lorry operators, reminding them of the importance of using the SLD correctly. Officers explained how the device plays a crucial role in reducing speeding incidents and preventing fatal accidents on highways.
According to YBrs. Tuan Norizan, the operation is not merely about enforcement but also about educating operators on long-term safety practices.
He stressed that JPJ will continue to intensify similar operations statewide, ensuring heavy vehicles do not carry dangerous or unstable loads that could endanger other road users.
He added that continuous monitoring is essential, especially with increasing traffic movement across Sarawak. JPJ aims to create safer roads by ensuring every commercial vehicle meets the required safety standards before operating.
The Ops Gempur initiative forms part of JPJ’s ongoing mission to strengthen compliance culture among transport operators and prevent accidents linked to technical failures and overloading.
With the cooperation of enforcement teams and industry players, JPJ hopes to maintain a safer road environment for all Malaysians travelling through Sarawak’s northern routes.
