BINTULU – More than 60 percent of students at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Ulu Segan will benefit from a new covered road project linking PPR Bandaria Park to the school, aimed at improving safety and convenience for daily travel.
The initiative, carried out under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), involves the construction of a land road equipped with roofs and tents to shield children from rain and reduce the risk of accidents.
Shahrezy Sulaiman, special officer to the Jepak assemblyman, said the project was inspected earlier this week to ensure progress was on track.
“This facility is very important to ensure that the children do not get wet in the rain and prevent them from falling,” he explained during a site visit on Tuesday.
He added that several enhancements had been introduced to maximise the project’s impact. “We have increased the number of projects compared to the original plan, including the roof to the front fence,” he said.
The project, valued at RM200k, is expected to directly benefit students commuting from Bandaria Park, providing them with a safer and more comfortable route to school.
The inspection covered structural works, roofing, and safety features, ensuring that the facilities meet the required standards before completion.
The improvements are designed not only to protect students from weather conditions, but also to create a more conducive environment for learning by reducing daily travel challenges.
Local education stakeholders have welcomed the project, noting that it reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing rural school infrastructure.
By addressing practical concerns such as safe access routes, the initiative supports broader efforts to improve educational outcomes in Bintulu.
Shahrezy expressed hope that the project would be completed on schedule, ensuring that students could benefit from the upgraded facilities without delay. “We want to provide a more comfortable and safer route for the students to travel to school,” he said.
The covered road project is part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades under the RTP, which continues to prioritise rural communities by delivering projects that directly improve quality of life and access to education.
