Sarawak Ports Modernised to Boost Efficiency and Regional Competitiveness

KUCHING – Sarawak is intensifying efforts to modernise its ports through a series of strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening logistics efficiency and positioning the state as a competitive hub in the region.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, announced that major upgrades are underway at both the Port of Kuching and Miri Port.

These improvements are designed to enhance operational capacity, accelerate cargo handling, and support long-term economic growth.

At the Port of Kuching, efficiency has already improved with the introduction of a new vehicle shipyard. Additional capacity is planned for 2026, while a 250-metre wharf extension and associated shipyard facilities are scheduled for completion in 2027.

Digitalisation measures have also been introduced, including the Electronic Convoy Note, which shortens container delivery times at entry gates. The fully operational Malaysia Maritime Single Window has further streamlined processes, enabling faster vessel clearance.

Meanwhile, at Miri Port, construction of the training bund and related works in Kuala Baram is progressing ahead of schedule. The project is expected to be completed three months early by the end of 2026.

Once operational, the infrastructure will allow cargo handling operations to shift from Sungai Miri to the Kuala Baram Terminal. It will also support the establishment of a free zone, paving the way for expanded oil and gas activities in the region.

Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah also revealed that the Sarawak Port Master Plan is in its final stages of preparation, with completion targeted for 2027.

The plan is expected to provide a comprehensive framework for port development, aligning with Sarawak’s ambition to become the main gateway to Borneo and a competitive logistics hub in Southeast Asia.

He emphasised that these initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to modernising infrastructure and ensuring Sarawak’s ports remain efficient, resilient, and capable of meeting future demands.

By combining physical upgrades with digital innovation, the state aims to strengthen its role in regional trade and attract greater investment.

The announcement was made during his ministry’s winding-up session at the Third Meeting of the Fourth Term of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN), underscoring the government’s focus on infrastructure as a cornerstone of economic development.
