KUCHING, SARAWAK – The Band Lab delivered a memorable Christmas celebration at The Spring Shopping Mall on Saturday, December 20, transforming the mall into a full-scale concert venue and drawing hundreds of shoppers into a powerful evening of music and community spirit.
Titled “For Good”, the large production took place at Level 2 of The Spring and featured more than 100 performers and crew members. What is usually a busy retail space was carefully reworked into a concert setting, proving that high-quality orchestral performances can thrive outside traditional theatres and concert halls.
The production was led by The Band Lab’s impressive 65-piece orchestra, which formed the backbone of the evening. Their cinematic sound filled the mall atrium and immediately caught the attention of shoppers on multiple levels. Supporting the orchestra was The Voice Lab, a 15-member vocal ensemble that added strong harmonies and emotional depth to each piece.
The concert was guided by host and narrator Vivien Ng, whose storytelling helped the audience follow the musical journey inspired by Wicked and The Wizard of Oz. Her narration connected the performances smoothly, making the programme accessible even to casual listeners who had stopped by while shopping.
Featured soloists Taylor Louise, Chien Ng and Christine Chai delivered confident vocal performances, while dancers from Miya Dance Studio added movement and visual energy that enhanced the storytelling. Together, the musicians, singers and dancers created a rich performance that held the crowd’s attention from start to finish.
Founder of The Band Lab, Jesmond Siew, said the concert was organised as a Christmas gift to the Kuching community. He shared that coordinating such a large group in a public venue like The Spring required careful planning, strong teamwork and support from many parties. Despite the challenges, he said the goal was simple, to give back to the community through music.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, The Band Lab partnered with GSC Malaysia to involve the audience directly. Shoppers and viewers were invited to post moments from the concert online and share something meaningful or positive from their year. Twenty participants received movie tickets, extending the message of gratitude beyond the mall itself.
The successful event further strengthened The Band Lab’s reputation as a key driver of large-scale music productions in Sarawak. Following this Christmas showcase at The Spring Shopping Mall, the group is preparing for its next major event, The ACG Concert, scheduled for January 31 at Stadium Perpaduan Kuching, continuing its mission to bring orchestral music closer to the public.
