Helping a Family Secure Safer Housing Through SPNB Scheme

Helping a Family Secure Safer Housing Through SPNB Scheme

KUCHING, Nov 23, 2025 — A family from Batu Kitang received timely assistance to secure safer housing after concerns were raised over the condition of their home, which is at risk of collapse. The effort was carried out through a joint initiative involving Batu Kitang assemblyman YB Dato Lo Khere Chiang, and party members who stepped in to help a comrade facing difficult living conditions.

The assistance involved two key steps aimed at ensuring the family’s safety and long-term housing security. First, the family was helped to relocate temporarily to the Stutong Resettlement Scheme, providing them with a safer and more stable place to stay. Second, support was given to help the family apply for the housing scheme offered by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad, commonly known as SPNB, which is designed to help eligible landowners build proper homes on their own land.

According to MPP councilor Gerald Goh who visited the site with YB Dato Lo Khere Chiang, the situation required urgent attention as the existing house was no longer structurally safe. The move to the resettlement area was intended to reduce immediate risk while longer-term solutions were being arranged. Leaders present stressed that public service is not only about policy but also about direct action when residents are facing real hardship.

SPNB plays an important role in helping low- and middle-income Malaysians achieve home ownership. Under its housing financing programme, eligible landowners are allowed to build one house on each approved land lot. The scheme offers financing of approximately RM90,000 and above, with affordable monthly repayments of around RM300 over a period that can extend up to 18 years, depending on approval and individual eligibility.

To qualify for the SPNB scheme, applicants must be Sarawakians, must not have any adverse CTOS record, and must not be undischarged bankrupts. These conditions are meant to ensure responsible financing while still keeping the programme accessible to those who genuinely need help.

YB Dato Lo Khere Chiang said initiatives like this reflect the importance of cooperation between elected representatives, local councillors, and the community. He encouraged residents who own land but struggle financially to explore the SPNB scheme, describing it as a realistic and achievable pathway to building a safe and proper home.

The assistance given to the Batu Kitang family highlights how government-linked programmes, when combined with grassroots support, can bring meaningful change to people’s lives. As housing safety remains a key concern for many families, continued awareness and outreach are expected to help more eligible residents come forward and seek support.
