Kuching Police Arrest Man Over Viral Cat Abuse Video

Kuching Police Arrest Man Over Viral Cat Abuse Video

KUCHING: Police have arrested a local man in connection with a disturbing viral video that showed a cat being brutally beaten to death, an incident that has sparked public anger and concern across social media platforms.

The arrest was confirmed on January 1, 2026, by Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu. The suspect, a 38-year-old local man, was detained following investigations into a 41-second video that went viral online. The video is believed to have been recorded at a self-service laundry shop along Jalan Astana here.

According to the police, initial investigations found that the suspect was directly involved in the incident shown in the video. Further inquiries revealed that the object used to assault the animal was a wooden block. The act, which resulted in the death of the cat, has been widely condemned by the public, with many calling for firm action to be taken.

Police also disclosed that the suspect has a previous criminal record involving drug-related offences. As part of the investigation, an initial urine screening test was conducted, and the suspect tested positive for drugs. This finding is now part of the ongoing investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 428 of the Penal Code (Act 574), which relates to committing mischief by killing or maiming an animal. If convicted, the offence carries a punishment of up to three years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or both.

ACP Alexson stressed that the police are treating the case seriously and urged the public to remain calm. He advised members of the public not to make any speculation or spread unverified information that could interfere with the investigation process.

The police also called on anyone with additional information related to the incident to come forward. Members of the public may contact the Kuching District Police Headquarters Operations Room at 082-244444 or reach the investigating officer, Inspector Ang Mei Cin, at 010-703 9818. Information can also be provided at any nearby police station.

The case has once again highlighted concerns over animal abuse and the importance of public responsibility in reporting crimes. Police reiterated their commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that justice is carried out fairly and according to due process.
