DOSM Sarawak Briefs Ministry on 2026 Economic Census Implementation

KUCHING – A courtesy visit took place on 20 January 2026 between Puan Dayang Rozana binti Abang Hassan, Director of Sarawak Unit of Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), and Tuan Syed Mohamad Fauzi bin Shahab, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications Sarawak.

The meeting, held at the Ministry’s office, focused on preparations for the 2026 Economic Census (BE 2026), which will run from January to October this year. The census is a nationwide effort aimed at collecting data on Malaysia’s business activities and economic performance.

During the session, DOSM Sarawak underscored the importance of timely and accurate data collection in shaping national policies and supporting economic development. The census findings will offer key insights into business performance, employment patterns, and the contribution of various sectors to Malaysia’s economy, helping leaders make informed decisions for future planning.

Officials highlighted that the census goes beyond statistical reporting, it serves as a vital tool to strengthen Malaysia’s economic resilience. By gathering comprehensive information from enterprises, the government can better understand industry challenges and craft policies that promote sustainable growth.

The Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications welcomed the initiative, acknowledging that reliable data plays a key role in boosting efficiency and guiding infrastructure development. The partnership between DOSM and related government agencies is expected to ensure smooth and coordinated implementation of the census across Sarawak.

Conducted every five years, the Economic Census is one of Malaysia’s most important statistical exercises, offering a snapshot of the nation’s economic structure and tracking progress toward long-term development goals.

Puan Dayang Rozana reaffirmed that “Data is the heart of the people’s economy,” underscoring the central role of statistics in empowering communities and promoting inclusive growth.

The courtesy visit reflected DOSM’s commitment to engaging stakeholders and fostering awareness of the census. With preparations in motion, DOSM aims to ensure that businesses and institutions across Sarawak are ready to participate actively in BE 2026.
