KUCHING – The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) has stepped up enforcement at bus terminals across the state as part of Ops Tahun Baharu Cina (TBC) 2026, with a strong emphasis on passenger safety and compliance with transport regulations.
Deputy Director of JPJ Sarawak, Mohd Faizal David Jemat, personally visited the Kuching bus terminal to oversee inspections, underscoring the department’s commitment to ensuring that operations are conducted transparently and effectively. His presence highlighted the importance of leadership involvement in maintaining public confidence in enforcement activities.
The inspections focused on verifying essential documentation, including Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM), permits issued by the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP), insurance coverage, and driver qualifications. Technical checks were also carried out to assess the condition and safety standards of buses before they were cleared for service.
Authorities explained that these measures are crucial in safeguarding passengers, particularly during the festive season when travel demand surges. JPJ officers have been deployed across Sarawak, including in Sibu and Mukah, where hundreds of vehicles were inspected.
In Sibu, 179 vehicles were checked, with several offences detected, such as expired licences and improper registration numbers. Meanwhile, in Mukah, 88 vehicles were inspected, revealing violations ranging from invalid licences to technical faults.
Beyond issuing summonses, JPJ officers have also been assisting road users in need. Reports from DayakDaily noted that officers provided support under challenging weather conditions, reinforcing their role not only as enforcers but also as public service providers.
The Sarawak Ministry of Transport has echoed JPJ’s efforts, stressing that road safety remains a pressing concern. Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin recently pointed out that accident statistics during festive periods remain worrying, urging both drivers and operators to prioritise safety.
Ops TBC 2026 will continue throughout the Chinese New Year period, with JPJ intensifying patrols and inspections to ensure compliance. The department has urged the public to cooperate fully with enforcement officers and to adhere strictly to road laws.
By maintaining rigorous checks and extending assistance to travellers, JPJ Sarawak aims to reduce risks on the road and ensure that festive journeys are safe and orderly for all.
