Sarawak Governor Visits Satok Ramadan Bazaar, Meets Traders and Visitors

KUCHING – The Governor of Sarawak, Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and his wife, Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, visited the Satok Ramadan Bazaar on 23 February, taking time to soak in the festive mood and meet traders and visitors.

They arrived around 2.30pm, joined by their daughter Sharifah Nong-Jasima and her husband, Muhammad Nur Hakeem Yusop. The couple were welcomed by Datuk Dr Haji Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, and Dato Haji Hilmy Othman, Mayor of Kuching North City Hall.

During the walkabout, the Governor and his wife stopped at various stalls filled with dishes prepared for breaking fast. One highlight was suntong tutok, a crowd favourite that has become a signature at the bazaar. Wan Junaidi even tried his hand at preparing the dish, praising the skill and effort shown by local traders.

They also bought several items, including traditional kuih and other dishes, for their evening meal. The gesture reflected support for small businesses that depend on Ramadan bazaars as a key source of income.

Throughout the visit, the couple greeted members of the public, posed for photos, and exchanged warm wishes. Their easygoing manner drew smiles from the crowd and added to the strong sense of community at the bazaar.

Before leaving, Wan Junaidi shared his hope that Ramadan would continue to strengthen unity and goodwill among Sarawakians. He stressed the need to support small traders whose hard work sustains their families and keeps the local economy moving.

“This glorious Ramadan should fuel the spirit of unity, strengthen brotherhood within the community, and bring blessings and abundance of sustenance to all, especially small traders who work tirelessly for their families,” he said.

The visit reflected the deeper meaning of Ramadan bazaars in Sarawak. They are more than places to buy food. They bring together tradition, culture, and community, while giving small entrepreneurs a chance to thrive.
