SIBU – The Ministry of Health Malaysia launched a food safety awareness initiative at the Ramadan Bazaar in Dataran Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang, Sibu, on 26 February 2026.
The programme, known as the Ramadan Bazaar Walkabout, was led by YBrs Ts Zailina binti Abdul Majid, Deputy Director General of Health (Food Safety and Quality).
She was joined by Ts. Mahamad Sukor bin Senapi, Director of the Compliance and Industry Development Division, and Encik Mohammad Jefri Crossley, Deputy Director of State Health (Food Safety and Quality) from the Sarawak State Health Department.
The walkabout aimed to engage directly with traders and visitors, encouraging them to adopt the “Watch and Choose” practice.
This approach promotes consumer awareness by urging buyers to observe hygiene standards before making food purchases, thereby ensuring that meals sold at the bazaar meet safety requirements.
Officials distributed specially designed aprons and “Watch and Choose” plaques to food operators. These items symbolise the vendors’ commitment to maintaining cleanliness and providing safe food to the public. The initiative also served as a reminder that food safety is a shared responsibility between sellers and consumers.
The Ramadan Bazaar, which attracts large crowds annually, is a popular destination for festive delicacies. With thousands of visitors expected throughout the fasting month, health authorities stressed the importance of strict hygiene practices to prevent foodborne illnesses.
Speaking during the programme, Ts Zailina highlighted that food safety is not only about compliance with regulations but also about protecting public health.
She noted that the Ministry of Health will continue to monitor bazaars across the country to ensure standards are upheld.
The Sarawak State Health Department has also reinforced its commitment to supporting traders through guidance and inspections.
By working closely with vendors, the department aims to raise awareness and improve practices that safeguard consumers.
This campaign reflects the government’s broader strategy to strengthen food safety nationwide. Similar initiatives have been carried out in other states, focusing on educating both sellers and buyers about the importance of hygiene in food preparation and handling.
For Sibu residents, the programme serves as reassurance that authorities are actively safeguarding public health during the festive season.
The collaboration between federal and state health officials demonstrates a united effort to ensure that Ramadan bazaars remain safe and enjoyable for all.
