KUCHING – Preparations for the International Council on Archives (ICA) Congress 2027 in Sarawak gained momentum with a courtesy visit by ICA President Ms Josée Kirps and a delegation from the National Archives of Malaysia to Pustaka Negeri Sarawak on 25 March 2026.
The visit was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen international cooperation and ensure Malaysia, particularly Sarawak, is well-prepared to host the prestigious global event.
The delegation engaged in strategic discussions covering programme planning, international-standard archive management, and the sharing of best practices in preserving and conserving documentary heritage.
Welcoming the delegation was Tuan Haji Japri Bujang Masli, Chief Executive Officer of Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, alongside senior members of the library’s management team.
Also present were Tuan Haji Zaidin Mohd Noor, Director General of the National Archives of Malaysia; Encik Afham Jauhari bin Aldi, Sarawak State Director of the National Archives; and several senior officers from both the National Archives and the Sarawak BE team.
During the session, participants explored ways to strengthen collaboration between archival institutions and libraries, with a focus on improving records management and enhancing public access to information.
The discussions highlighted the importance of positioning Malaysia as a hub of excellence in archival practices at the global level.
The delegation was also briefed on the initiatives undertaken by the Sarawak State Library in knowledge management and the preservation of state treasures.
These efforts underline Sarawak’s commitment to safeguarding cultural and historical records while promoting accessibility for future generations.
Speaking at the event, officials emphasised that ICA 2027 will provide a platform for Malaysia to showcase its archival expertise and foster international partnerships.
The Congress is expected to attract professionals, scholars, and policymakers from around the world, offering opportunities for knowledge exchange and collaboration.
The visit concluded with optimism that the strengthened ties between ICA, the National Archives of Malaysia, and Pustaka Negeri Sarawak will contribute significantly to the success of ICA 2027.
The engagement reflects Malaysia’s determination to deliver a world-class congress and reinforce its role in the global archival community.
