AYER KEROH, MELAKA – A 30-year-old woman was detained for suspected khalwat with a male electrician after they were caught by her own family in a house in Ayer Keroh last Tuesday.
The incident happened around 12.30am when the woman’s family members became suspicious of the man’s presence in the house. They decided to check and found the pair alone together in a closed room under questionable circumstances. The family then brought an imam as a witness before handing both individuals over to the authorities.
The couple was later referred to the Jabatan Agama Islam Melaka for further action. It is understood that the man works as an electrical wiring technician, while the woman is currently unemployed.
In a separate operation on the same day, enforcement officers from the Jabatan Agama Islam Melaka, together with an imam, carried out another raid at a different house in Ayer Keroh. The raid followed public information about suspected khalwat activities.
During the operation at about 9pm, another couple aged 25 and 21 was detained for allegedly being alone together in a house without a valid marital relationship.
All individuals involved are being investigated under Section 53 of the Melaka Syariah Offences Enactment 1991. The law covers offences related to khalwat or living together without a lawful marriage under Islamic law. If found guilty, they may face fines, imprisonment, or both, depending on the Syariah Court’s decision.
Authorities reminded the public to respect religious laws and maintain proper conduct. They also stressed that community cooperation plays an important role in upholding moral values and social harmony.
This case serves as a reminder that strict enforcement will continue against those who violate Syariah laws in the state.
