KUCHING – The Sarawak Government Members Welfare and Sports Council (MAKSAK) successfully hosted the MAKSAK Sarawak Indoor Games 2026 Chess Championship on 4 April at Rumah MAKSAK Sarawak, Kuching.
The event, held from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, brought together teams from various state and federal government agencies, showcasing both competitive spirit and camaraderie.
Among the agencies represented were the JKR Sarawak, MSKKM, PUSAKA, KESUDA Sarawak, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), LKIM, JPS Sarawak, and the Ministries of Health and Education.
The tournament featured men’s and women’s team categories, with participants demonstrating strong discipline and sportsmanship throughout the day.
Their participation reflected the department’s commitment to encouraging healthy competition and teamwork among civil servants.
Several notable achievements were recorded by the JKR Sarawak team. William Lau Beng Siong secured fifth place in the men’s category, while Dorithy Anak Dafeet achieved fourth place in the women’s category.
Adalia Felicia Anak Weverlay Gill earned recognition as the fifth-best female player and was also honoured as the Most Senior Player. Meanwhile, Yusuf Bin Mohammad was named the most junior player, highlighting the diversity of talent within the team.
Chess, often regarded as a test of strategy and mental endurance, was praised for its ability to sharpen concentration, enhance decision-making, and instil self-discipline.
The event not only celebrated individual achievements but also reinforced the value of teamwork and unity among government agencies.
The MAKSAK Sarawak Indoor Games have long been a platform for fostering closer ties between civil servants, encouraging them to engage in sports that promote both physical and mental well-being.
This year’s chess tournament continued that tradition, offering participants an opportunity to bond while competing in a challenging intellectual sport.
Organisers expressed hope that the JKR Sarawak team, along with other participating agencies, will continue to build on their performance and aim for greater success in future competitions.
The event underscored the importance of sports in strengthening community spirit within the civil service, while also highlighting Sarawak’s commitment to nurturing talent across different fields.
