KUCHING, 2 April 2026 (Thursday) – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak, through its Automotive Engineering Division, has carried out Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) inspections on two newly acquired fire engines.
The inspection forms part of the approval process required before the vehicles can be registered and licensed for use on public roads.
VTA is a mandatory procedure for all new vehicle models, ensuring compliance with safety standards, technical specifications, and regulatory requirements.
The inspection team was led by Mr Diwong Sidep, alongside Mr Samuel Bonki and Mr Ts. Fadzlie Mohd Ibrahim from JPJ Sarawak’s Automotive Engineering Division.
Their role was to verify that the fire engines met the stringent criteria set by the department before being cleared for operational deployment.
JPJ Sarawak emphasised that the VTA process is a crucial regulatory mechanism designed to safeguard road users.
By ensuring that only vehicles meeting approved standards are allowed on the road, the department aims to maintain high levels of safety and reliability across the transport sector.
Vehicle Type Approval is not limited to emergency vehicles. It applies to all new vehicle models introduced in Malaysia, covering passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and specialised machinery.
The process involves detailed checks on design, construction, and performance to ensure compliance with national and international standards.
Officials noted that the inspection of fire engines carries particular importance, as these vehicles are critical to public safety and emergency response.
Ensuring their compliance with technical and safety requirements guarantees that they can operate effectively in urgent situations without posing risks to road users.
JPJ Sarawak reiterated its commitment to maintaining strict enforcement of vehicle standards. The department continues to work closely with manufacturers, suppliers, and government agencies to uphold road safety and ensure that vehicles entering service are fit for purpose.
The inspection reflects JPJ’s broader mission of promoting safe, sustainable, and efficient transport systems in Sarawak.
By enforcing VTA regulations, the department contributes to reducing risks on the road and enhancing public confidence in vehicle safety.
