KUCHING – Jalan Mawar is set to benefit from a significant community upgrade, with RM200,000 allocated under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) to enhance local recreational facilities.
The funding will be used to modernise the basketball court and children’s playground, creating a safer and more inclusive environment for residents.
The basketball court will undergo extensive refurbishment. Plans include repairing the playing surface, strengthening structural elements, and installing fencing to improve safety.
In addition, pickleball facilities will be introduced, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity across Malaysia.
This move is expected to transform the court into a multi-purpose space suitable for both traditional basketball and emerging sports, encouraging participation from all age groups.
Meanwhile, the children’s playground will be redesigned with safety as a priority. Works will involve levelling the ground, laying protective flooring, and installing sturdier play equipment.
These improvements aim to reduce risks of injury while offering children a more engaging play experience. Parents are expected to welcome the changes, as the upgraded facilities will provide greater peace of mind.
Local leaders have emphasised that the initiative is not only about infrastructure but also about fostering community spirit.
By creating a modern recreational hub, the project seeks to encourage healthier lifestyles, social interaction, and inclusivity among residents.
The upgrades are part of wider efforts in Kuching to improve neighbourhood amenities and ensure public spaces remain accessible to all.
The RTP allocation reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to grassroots development. Similar projects have been rolled out in other parts of Sarawak, focusing on sports facilities, playgrounds, and community halls.
Jalan Mawar’s upgrade is seen as a continuation of this strategy, ensuring urban and suburban communities benefit from improved infrastructure.
Residents have expressed optimism that the new facilities will revitalise the area, making it a preferred gathering spot for families and youth.
With construction expected to begin soon, Jalan Mawar is poised to become a model for community-centred development in Kuching.
