MIRI – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Miri Operations Unit stepped in to provide immediate assistance following a road accident along the Bekenu–Miri route on Thursday, 9 April 2026.
The incident involved a young boy and an adult man, both of whom required urgent support at the scene. JPJ officers, who were returning to Miri at the time, acted swiftly to stabilise the situation.
Their first priority was to manage traffic flow to prevent further collisions, ensuring that vehicles could pass safely without adding to the risk.
In addition to traffic control, officers turned their attention to children present at the site. Witnesses reported that the youngsters were visibly distressed, and JPJ personnel worked to calm them down, offering reassurance and ensuring their safety until further help arrived.
The department highlighted that such actions reflect the human values behind enforcement duties. While JPJ is widely recognised for its role in implementing road laws, the agency also plays a vital part in offering compassion and practical aid during emergencies.
A JPJ Sarawak spokesperson expressed sympathy for those affected, stating: “JPJ Sarawak expresses its condolences to the victim’s family and prays that they are given strength and perseverance in facing this ordeal.”
Road safety remains a pressing issue in Sarawak, with authorities frequently reminding motorists to exercise caution, particularly on rural and intercity routes such as Bekenu–Miri. According to recent reports, this stretch of road has seen several accidents in recent years, often linked to speeding and driver fatigue.
Community members have praised JPJ’s intervention, noting that their presence helped restore order and provided comfort during a difficult moment. The department’s actions underline the broader role of enforcement agencies in safeguarding both lives and public confidence.
The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of road travel and the importance of vigilance. Authorities continue to encourage drivers to prioritise safety, adhere to traffic regulations, and remain alert to changing road conditions.
As investigations into the accident proceed, JPJ has reiterated its commitment to supporting victims and maintaining road safety across Sarawak.
