KUCHING – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Kuching Operations Unit carried out a targeted enforcement exercise on Jalan Dato Patinggi Abdul Rahman Yakub on Friday, 10 April 2026. The operation, focusing on HID and LED lamp offences, was part of a wider initiative to strengthen road safety and ensure compliance with vehicle regulations.
During the exercise, officers inspected a total of 546 vehicles of various categories. The checks revealed several violations, including motorists driving without a valid licence, expired licences, missing registration numbers, and other technical faults relating to vehicle compliance.
Authorities confirmed that eight vehicles were seized due to more serious offences involving expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM) and lack of insurance coverage. The seized vehicles comprised four cars, one pickup truck, and three motorcycles. These cases were handled in accordance with existing legal provisions, with enforcement actions taken against the offenders.
JPJ Kuching highlighted that the operation was designed not only to detect illegal modifications such as unauthorised HID and LED lamps but also to address broader issues that compromise road safety and driver comfort. Officials stressed that such enforcement measures are necessary to reduce risks associated with poorly maintained or non-compliant vehicles.
The department reiterated its commitment to intensifying enforcement activities across Sarawak. By conducting regular operations, JPJ aims to ensure that road users adhere to regulations, thereby safeguarding both motorists and pedestrians.
Community members have long raised concerns about vehicles fitted with excessively bright or improperly installed lamps, which can cause discomfort and hazards for other drivers. The operation was therefore welcomed as a proactive step towards addressing these complaints.
Experts in road safety note that consistent enforcement plays a crucial role in deterring violations. Regular checks not only penalise offenders but also serve as a reminder to the wider public about the importance of vehicle maintenance and compliance with licensing requirements.
JPJ Sarawak confirmed that similar operations will continue in different parts of the state, reflecting its ongoing priority of protecting road users. The department emphasised that safety and well-being remain central to its enforcement strategy, and that public cooperation is essential in achieving these goals.
