TANJUNG MANIS – A fire that broke out at the Semalau waste disposal site on 25 April 2026 was successfully brought under control following a rapid joint response by emergency teams.
The incident was first reported at 1.50pm when the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM / a.k.a. BBP Tanjung Manis) alerted the Tanjung Manis District Civil Defence Force (APM Tanjung Manis).
Within minutes, four APM personnel were deployed alongside JBPM officers to the site. They arrived at approximately 2.05pm and immediately assessed the situation before commencing firefighting operations.
The blaze involved a large pile of accumulated rubbish. Teams quickly organised themselves into designated roles to tackle the flames from multiple angles.
According to officials, the coordinated effort ensured that the fire did not spread beyond the affected area.
Operations continued for about an hour, during which water hoses and other suppression methods were used to extinguish the burning waste.
By the end of the operation, the fire was fully put out and the site declared safe. No injuries or damage to nearby facilities were reported.
Authorities confirmed that all personnel returned to the district operations centre without incident. The swift containment highlighted the importance of close cooperation between agencies in responding to emergencies.
Waste disposal sites are known to be vulnerable to fire hazards due to the presence of combustible materials. In Malaysia, similar incidents have previously raised concerns about environmental risks and air quality.
Local authorities have emphasised the need for preventive measures, including better waste management practices and regular monitoring of landfill conditions.
The Tanjung Manis operation demonstrated effective coordination between APM and JBPM, reflecting broader national efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness.
