KUCHING – Preparations for Sarawak’s role as co-host of the 2027 South East Asian Games (SEA Games) are advancing steadily, with sports facilities showing encouraging progress according to the planned schedule.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, reported that upgrading and construction works at several key venues are on track.
His official inspection included the Sarawak Stadium, the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre, and Stadium Perpaduan, which form part of the state’s main sports complex.
“Overall, the project progress is very good and adheres to the original schedule. We hope all works can be expedited and completed according to the established timeline,” he said during a press conference following the site visit.
Sarawak is set to play a vital role as co-host, with responsibility for the opening ceremony and 17 of the 38 sports contested.
The state government has allocated approximately RM350 million for hosting, alongside RM280 million for upgrading facilities, bringing the total investment to RM630 million.
Dr Taufiq explained that the Sarawak Stadium is expected to be completed and handed over in January 2027, while the overall upgrading of sports facilities should be finalised by May or June 2027.
This timeline will allow three to four months before the games begin in September 2027 to fine-tune technical and logistical arrangements.
He expressed confidence in the government’s commitment to ensuring the SEA Games meet international standards and run smoothly.
The minister highlighted that the collaboration between the federal government, the Sarawak government, and the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) is crucial in delivering venues that meet global expectations.
During the visit, the delegation received detailed briefings from the Public Works Department (JKR) and MASOC regarding project status, technical specifications, and readiness of facilities. The updates reinforced confidence that Sarawak’s preparations are progressing as planned.
Observers note that the investment reflects Sarawak’s ambition to showcase its capacity to host international events.
The SEA Games are expected to bring significant economic and social benefits, including tourism growth, local business opportunities, and community engagement.
With the state’s preparations advancing on schedule, Sarawak is positioning itself to deliver a memorable SEA Games in 2027, combining world-class sporting competition with strong organisational standards.
