BINTULU – Preparations for the upcoming Gawai Dayak festivities in Bintulu are underway following the first coordination meeting of the district’s main organising committee.
The session, known as Coordination Meeting No. 1/2026, took place on 28 April at the Bakun Room, Li Hua Hotel Bus Terminal Bintulu.
The meeting was chaired by YB Datuk Majang Renggi, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development (Port Development) Sarawak, alongside the Bintulu district officer.
Their leadership marked the beginning of structured planning for one of Sarawak’s most significant cultural celebrations.
Representatives from various local agencies attended, including the Bintulu Division Youth and Sports Office.
Among them were Mr Hailey Robson Anak Banyang and Mrs Diana Nuff Binti Abdel Aziz, who were entrusted with leading the pipe competition committee for the forthcoming celebration.
Their appointment reflects the importance of youth and sports offices in supporting cultural and recreational activities that form part of Gawai Dayak.
The coordination meeting focused on aligning responsibilities among different committees, ensuring that each aspect of the celebration is managed effectively.
Organisers highlighted the need for cooperation between government departments, local organisations, and community groups to deliver a successful event.
Gawai Dayak, celebrated annually on 1 and 2 June, is a major festival for the Dayak community in Sarawak.
It marks the end of the rice harvesting season and is widely recognised as a time of thanksgiving, unity, and cultural pride.
In Bintulu, the celebration often includes traditional performances, competitions, and community gatherings, drawing participants from across the division.
By convening early, the committee aims to ensure that logistical arrangements, cultural programmes, and community participation are well coordinated.
The involvement of multiple agencies demonstrates the collective commitment to preserving traditions while fostering inclusivity.
Datuk Majang Renggi emphasised the importance of thorough planning to uphold the spirit of Gawai Dayak, noting that the festival serves as a platform to strengthen community bonds and showcase Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage.
The meeting set the tone for further discussions and follow-up sessions, with organisers expected to refine details in the weeks ahead.
As preparations continue, residents of Bintulu can look forward to a vibrant and meaningful celebration that honours tradition while engaging the wider community.
