KUCHING – Preparations for the upcoming Gawai Dayak 2026 celebration took a significant step forward today as His Excellency, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, together with Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi, recorded a special message at the Sarawak Astana.
The session was held at 10.00 am on 4 May, marking the state’s commitment to honouring one of Sarawak’s most important cultural festivities.
The arrival of the Governor and his wife was warmly received by Tuan Haji Junih Salleh, Private Secretary to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, alongside senior officers from the Astana.
Their presence underscored the ceremonial importance of the recording, which is intended to reach communities across Sarawak during the festive season.
The recording was facilitated by the Sarawak Media Group (TVS) in partnership with the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS).
Both agencies coordinated closely to ensure the production was carried out smoothly, reflecting the collaborative effort between state media and public communication bodies in promoting cultural heritage.
The message, which will be broadcast on 31 May 2026 at 8.00 pm, is expected to highlight the significance of Gawai Dayak as a celebration of unity, gratitude, and cultural identity.
Traditionally observed by the Dayak community, Gawai Dayak marks the end of the harvest season and is recognised as a time for thanksgiving and renewal.
The Governor’s message is anticipated to encourage harmony and inclusivity, values that remain central to Sarawak’s diverse society.
In his remarks, Tun Pehin Sri expressed appreciation to TVS and UKAS for their role in ensuring the recording was conducted seamlessly.
Toh Puan also conveyed gratitude to the production teams, acknowledging their contribution to preserving the spirit of the festival through modern communication channels.
Gawai Dayak, celebrated annually on 1 June, has grown into a statewide event that brings together communities from different backgrounds.
Beyond its cultural roots, the festival has become a symbol of Sarawak’s unity and resilience, often accompanied by traditional rituals, communal gatherings, and cultural performances.
