CEBU – Malaysia and Vietnam have reaffirmed their partnership under the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation framework, a unique arrangement within ASEAN that underscores the high level of trust and unity between the two nations.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim met Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung to discuss ways of expanding collaboration in emerging sectors, including the digital economy, artificial intelligence, science and technology education, food security, and renewable energy.
Both leaders emphasised the importance of progressive financial governance to support sustainable growth across the region.
Malaysia welcomed the signing of several strategic initiatives, notably the Memorandum of Understanding on the Digital Economy.
This agreement is expected to enhance cooperation in digital trade, innovation, and cross-border technology projects.
In addition, both countries agreed to pursue energy-related ventures, including renewable energy projects that could strengthen regional resilience and contribute to ASEAN’s long-term sustainability goals.
The meeting highlighted the importance of education and technology as drivers of future cooperation. Malaysia expressed its readiness to work with Vietnam in advancing STEM education and research, recognising the role of science and innovation in shaping economic competitiveness.
Vietnam, in turn, acknowledged Malaysia’s expertise in digital transformation and financial governance, noting that these areas are crucial for building a modern and resilient economy.
Food security also featured prominently in the discussions. Both governments agreed that closer collaboration in agriculture and sustainable food systems is necessary to safeguard communities against global supply chain disruptions.
Malaysia and Vietnam aim to share best practices and strengthen regional networks to ensure reliable access to essential resources.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stressed that ASEAN must continue to serve as a platform for cooperation built on confidence, sustainability, and mutual progress.
He noted that in an increasingly challenging global environment, the strength of the region depends on its ability to reinforce economic networks, education, technology, and collective well-being.
The comprehensive strategic cooperation between Malaysia and Vietnam is the only one of its kind among ASEAN member states, reflecting the depth of trust and shared vision between the two countries.
Analysts view this partnership as a model for future ASEAN collaborations, particularly in areas that require collective action such as digital transformation, renewable energy, and regional security.
The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to advancing cooperation that benefits citizens in both nations while contributing to ASEAN’s broader goals of peace, stability, and prosperity.
