Bangladeshi Worker Dies in Meradong Road Accident

MERADONG – A Bangladeshi man lost his life in a road accident involving a lorry along Jalan Serdeng near Kampung Jaluh Baru, Bintangor, on Saturday morning.

Meradong District Police Chief DSP Tansli Mering confirmed that the victim was identified as Md Fazlur Rahman, aged 40, who worked as a labourer on a bridge construction project.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining severe head injuries. Initial investigations revealed that the incident occurred at approximately 8.50 am.

The victim, who was walking on the left shoulder of the road, is believed to have attempted to cross suddenly as a lorry travelling from Semop towards Sibu approached. Due to the close distance, the driver was unable to avoid the collision.

Following the accident, the victim’s body was transported to Sarikei Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Authorities have also notified the Bangladesh Embassy regarding the incident.

Police stated that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which deals with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

This tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Sarawak, particularly in areas where heavy vehicles frequently travel and pedestrian crossings are limited.
