KUCHING – Sarawak’s state-owned airline, AirBorneo, is set to begin jet operations this July, with initial routes connecting Kuching to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Kota Kinabalu, and Jakarta.
The announcement was made by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, during the Sarawak Level 2026 Workers’ Day Celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).
The Premier explained that the establishment of AirBorneo represents a significant step in Sarawak’s modernisation of its transportation system.
He emphasised that the airline will not only enhance connectivity but also create new employment opportunities, particularly in the aviation sector.
“Not only are we doing ART (Autonomous Rail Transit), we are also establishing our own airline. That requires a lot of pilots. God willing, this July, AirBorneo will have jets; we will go for the start in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Kota Kinabalu and Jakarta,” he said.
He highlighted that both AirBorneo and the ART system demonstrate Sarawak’s ability to develop advanced infrastructure using its own resources.
The ART project, currently under construction, is designed to operate autonomously and will be powered by hydrogen, reflecting the state’s commitment to sustainable technology.
“Our ART is currently being built, using our own money to build it. This ART is autonomous, self-propelled and uses hydrogen,” he added.
The Premier also noted that Sarawak’s growing opportunities are encouraging more Sarawakians who previously worked in Peninsular Malaysia to return home.
With new jobs emerging in aviation, transportation, and infrastructure, the state is positioning itself as a hub for innovation and development.
Infrastructure expansion remains a priority, with the premier confirming that 22 bridges and new road networks are being constructed to improve accessibility in rural and interior regions.
He pointed out that one of the most significant projects, the Batang Lupar Bridge, will soon be open to the public.
“This month, God willing, the third week, you can cross Batang Lupar with the longest bridge in Malaysia that crosses the river,” he said.
The launch of AirBorneo is expected to strengthen Sarawak’s regional and international connectivity, providing greater access for travellers and businesses alike.
By linking Kuching with major destinations such as Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Kota Kinabalu, and Jakarta, the airline will play a crucial role in boosting tourism, trade, and investment.
The Premier’s announcement underscores Sarawak’s broader vision of building a modern, self-sufficient economy supported by advanced infrastructure and sustainable technology.
With AirBorneo’s upcoming operations and the ART system under development, Sarawak is taking bold steps towards reshaping its transportation landscape while creating opportunities for its people.
