MIRI – The Miri City Council (MBM), working jointly with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), has carried out an enforcement operation targeting heavy vehicles parked within residential neighbourhoods.
Authorities emphasised that large vehicles such as lorries should not be stationed in housing areas, citing risks including traffic congestion, road surface damage and potential hazards to residents.
Officials reminded owners that designated parking zones approved by the authorities are the only permissible locations for such vehicles.
During the integrated operation, six lorries were found parked in residential streets, and action was taken against their owners.
MBM confirmed that these checks will be conducted regularly to ensure compliance with regulations and to safeguard community wellbeing.
The council explained that heavy vehicles parked in residential areas can obstruct visibility, increase accident risks and cause structural wear on roads not designed to bear such weight.
Residents have previously raised concerns about safety, particularly for children and pedestrians navigating narrow streets.
JPJ officers involved in the operation noted that enforcement is part of a wider strategy to uphold road safety standards and protect public infrastructure.
They added that cooperation from vehicle owners is crucial to prevent incidents that could endanger lives.
MBM reiterated its appreciation for responsible lorry and heavy vehicle operators who comply with the rules.
The council urged all owners to avoid parking in housing estates and instead use authorised facilities, highlighting that adherence to regulations contributes to safer and more orderly neighbourhoods.
Officials confirmed that similar operations will continue across Miri, with the aim of reducing risks and promoting a safer environment for residents.
The council stressed that enforcement is not punitive in nature but intended to encourage compliance and protect the community.
The initiative reflects MBM’s ongoing commitment to maintaining public safety and ensuring that residential areas remain conducive for families.
