KUALA LUMPUR – A 24-year-old college student was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here on Thursday over the deaths of a married couple in a tragic road crash along Jalan Ampang near Great Eastern Mall earlier this month.
The accused, Danish Raman Kamar Kumaresan, appeared calm as the charge was read before Magistrate Nurul Izzah Hasan Basri. He nodded in understanding when informed of the accusation against him.
However, no plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court. The court fixed August 17 for mention of the case.
According to the charge sheet, Danish is accused of murdering A. Doraisingam, 61, and his wife, A. Menagah, 56, in an incident that occurred on Jalan Ampang from the direction of KLCC towards Ampang Point at about 5.30am on May 2.
The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.
The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutors Mohamad Shahrizat Amadan and Faizal@Amrin Noor Hadi. The accused was represented by lawyers Devinder Kaur Dhaliwal and Mansheel Kaur.
The fatal incident had earlier drawn public attention after reports stated that the victims were travelling on a Honda Wave Alpha motorcycle when they were allegedly hit from behind by a Toyota Vios car. Both victims reportedly suffered severe head injuries and died at the scene.
Family members of the victims were also present during the court proceedings. Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom, the victims’ nephew, K. Suresh Kumar, 47, said his uncle had been following his usual morning routine of sending his wife to work at Gleneagles Hospital when the tragedy occurred.
He said the family was still struggling to cope with the sudden loss, adding that the couple’s children were deeply affected by the incident.
“The accused’s family has expressed a wish to meet us, but we have not met them yet. What we want now is for justice to take its course,” he said.
Suresh added that the couple left behind three children aged between 19 and 26.
The case has sparked widespread discussion online, with many Malaysians expressing sadness over the loss of the couple and calling for stricter road safety enforcement in busy city areas.
Authorities are continuing investigations while awaiting the next court proceedings in August.
