KOTA SAMARAHAN – The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) is finalising preparations for the upcoming pre-opening of the Batang Lupar 1 Bridge, scheduled to take place on 21 May 2026.
In advance of the event, the Director of Public Works, YBhg. Datu Adj. Prof. Ir. Ts. Gs. Br. PMr. Dr. Cassidy anak Morris, conducted a site visit to assess the readiness of the project.
The inspection focused on ensuring that safety measures, traffic arrangements, and facilities for road users are fully in place before the bridge is opened to the public.
The Batang Lupar 1 Bridge is a significant infrastructure development under Sarawak’s wider initiative to strengthen connectivity across the state.
Once operational, the bridge is expected to improve travel efficiency, reduce reliance on ferry services, and enhance accessibility between Samarahan and other districts.
During the preparatory visit, coordination with relevant agencies was also reviewed to ensure smooth operations during the pre-opening phase.
This included checks on traffic flow management, signage, lighting, and emergency response readiness. Officials emphasised that the bridge must meet safety standards and provide convenience for all road users.
The Batang Lupar 1 Bridge project forms part of Sarawak’s long-term vision to modernise its transport network.
By investing in resilient infrastructure, the state aims to support economic growth, improve mobility, and safeguard communities against disruptions caused by environmental factors.
Local communities have expressed anticipation for the opening, noting that the bridge will significantly reduce travel time and strengthen links between coastal and inland areas. Businesses are also expected to benefit from improved logistics and easier access to markets.
