BINTULU – The Sarawak Government is advancing its infrastructure agenda in the Bintulu division with the construction of a new dual lane highway designed to enhance connectivity to Bintulu Airport.
The project, which spans 4.1 kilometres, will link the Jepak Roundabout to the Bintulu Airport Roundabout. Site ownership commenced in May 2025, and the full construction is scheduled for completion in October 2027.
During a working visit on 23 May 2026, Premier Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg inspected the site and was briefed on its progress.
Current physical development stands at 15.34 percent, surpassing the original target of 12.42 percent, reflecting a positive variance of 2.92 percent.
The scope of the project includes the construction of a four-lane dual carriageway built to JKR standards, two P-turns at KM1.8 and KM2.1, a 95-metre bridge at KM2.7, and upgrades to the Bintulu Airport Roundabout. These features are expected to improve traffic flow and provide safer, more efficient travel for motorists.
Officials noted that the new route will significantly reduce travel time between Bintulu town and the airport. It will also serve as an alternative route towards Tatau and Sibu, thereby easing congestion on existing roads.
The premier emphasised that the project forms part of Sarawak’s broader strategy to modernise infrastructure and support economic growth.
By improving access to key transport hubs, the government aims to strengthen mobility for residents and businesses alike.
Local stakeholders believe the dual carriageway will not only enhance convenience for travellers but also contribute to the efficiency of logistics and trade in the region.
The improved roadway is expected to support Bintulu’s role as a growing industrial and commercial centre while also boosting tourism by making the airport more accessible.
The project reflects Sarawak’s commitment to delivering strategic infrastructure that balances development with community needs.
Once completed, the dual carriageway is anticipated to become a vital link in the division’s transport network, reinforcing Bintulu’s position as a gateway to the wider region.
