BINTULU – The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), YBhg. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Nagulendran Kangayatkarasu, visited the construction site of the new quarters for the Malaysian Chemistry Department in Bintulu on 10 June 2026 to review progress and receive updates on the project’s implementation.
The initiative, which aims to replace ageing quarters with modern facilities, is designed to provide more comfortable and conducive accommodation for staff.
The project reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants through sustainable infrastructure development.
During the visit, Dr Nagulendran was briefed on the current status of the works, which have reached 29.88 per cent physical progress, in line with the planned schedule.
The construction scope includes two-storey Class C semi-detached houses and five-storey quarters for Class E and Class G, incorporating structural, architectural, and finishing works according to specified standards.
Accompanying the Secretary-General were Ir. Lau Sie Hung, Divisional Engineer of the Bintulu Division Public Works Department; Mr Aizzat Firdaus, Assistant Divisional Engineer (Development); and Farah Hanun, Project Manager (Buildings, Development Sector).
They provided detailed information on the project’s progress and outlined plans for the next phase of implementation.
Officials highlighted that the new quarters will not only improve living conditions but also ensure that facilities meet both current and future needs of the Malaysian Chemistry Department staff.
The project is expected to enhance morale and productivity by offering better housing options in line with modern standards.
Dr Nagulendran emphasised that the development demonstrates the government’s dedication to supporting civil servants, particularly in specialised departments such as the Chemistry Department, which plays a vital role in scientific and regulatory work. He noted that the provision of quality housing is essential for sustaining a motivated workforce.
The visit provided MOSTI with an opportunity to directly observe the progress of construction and reaffirm its commitment to ensuring that the facilities are delivered on time and to the highest standards.
With steady advancement, the project is set to become a benchmark for future infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving civil servant welfare in Sarawak.
