KOTA SAMARAHAN – Police have detained a man for driving under the influence of alcohol during a late-night enforcement exercise along Jalan La Promenade.
The operation, known as Op Mabuk, was conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) of the Kota Samarahan District Police Headquarters (IPD).
The initiative began at 11.50 pm on 12 June and continued until 4.00 am the following morning. A senior officer, seven traffic personnel, and ten members from other branches of the district police took part in the coordinated effort.
Their focus was on monitoring road users and identifying those who posed risks due to alcohol consumption.
During the checks, 67 vehicles and 70 individuals were inspected. Screening was carried out using the SD2+ alcohol detection device, which provides rapid results to determine whether drivers have consumed alcohol.
Out of three individuals tested, one man aged 33 was confirmed positive, while the other two were cleared.
The SD2+ device is widely used in Malaysia as an early detection tool, enabling officers to take swift action before proceeding with further legal measures.
Police emphasised that such technology is crucial in ensuring road safety and reducing accidents linked to impaired driving.
In addition to the arrest, officers issued 25 summonses for various traffic offences identified during the operation.
These included violations such as expired licences, faulty vehicle equipment, and other breaches of road regulations.
The Royal Malaysian Police highlighted that Op Mabuk forms part of ongoing nationwide efforts to curb drunk driving.
Authorities stressed that enforcement will be strengthened periodically to ensure compliance with traffic laws and to protect road users from the dangers posed by intoxicated drivers.
Driving under the influence remains a serious concern in Malaysia, with strict penalties under the Road Transport Act. Offenders may face fines, imprisonment, or disqualification from driving.
Police continue to remind the public that consuming alcohol before driving not only endangers the driver but also places passengers and other road users at risk.
Community awareness campaigns have also been launched in recent years to educate the public on the consequences of drunk driving.
These initiatives complement enforcement operations by encouraging responsible behaviour and promoting safer roads.
The Kota Samarahan IPD reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining public safety through regular operations and urged motorists to act responsibly.
Authorities believe that consistent enforcement, combined with public cooperation, will help reduce the incidence of alcohol-related accidents in the district.
