BETONG – The Governor of Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, accompanied by his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Hajjah Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi, visited the Rural Produce Market in Betong on the morning of 14 June.
The market, widely known as Pasar Tamu Betong, serves as a vital hub for local produce and community trade.
Arriving at 7.15 am, the Governor and Toh Puan were joined by the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, Datuk Dr Haji Abdul Rahman Junaidi, who was accompanied by his wife, Datin Hajah Siti Shorgayah Ahmad Zaidin.
Their presence was warmly received by Sarawak Deputy Minister of Youth Development, Sports and Entrepreneurs, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, together with his wife, Datin Rosemarie Wong Lu Yi.
Also present were Member of Parliament for Betong, Dato Dr Richard Rapu @ Aman anak Begri, and Betong Division Resident, Datu Richard Michael Abunawas, with his wife, Datin Marilyn Tida.
The Rural Produce Market is a lively centre for traditional Sarawak agriculture, offering a wide range of forest products, fresh vegetables, fruits, and preserved foods.
It remains a cornerstone of Betong’s local economy, sustaining livelihoods and preserving cultural practices.
During the visit, traders and visitors took the opportunity to greet the governor and Toh Puan, with many capturing the moment through photographs and selfies. The governor and his wife expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by the community.
They conveyed their hopes that traders would continue to prosper and that the market would remain a thriving centre of commerce, supporting the well-being of families across Betong Division.
The governor’s visit highlighted the importance of rural markets in sustaining Sarawak’s economic resilience.
