KUCHING – The Fo Fa Ling Xian Zong movement commemorated its 54th anniversary alongside the 36th anniversary of its Meditation Society in Kuching, highlighting both its cultural legacy and its role in promoting health and wellness among Sarawakians.
Originating in Johor more than five decades ago, the organisation established its Kuching branch 36 years ago. Since then, it has grown to encompass 21 units, including two primary school units unique to Sarawak.
Today, the society counts over 1,000 practitioners of Legalism’s Qi Gong and Legalism’s Aerobics, representing diverse ages, races, and religions.
The anniversary celebration underscored the importance of physical and mental wellbeing in Sarawak’s development.
Health statistics presented during the event revealed pressing concerns: half of Sarawak’s children are overweight or obese, while among those aged 60 and above, 76 per cent face high cholesterol, 73 per cent hypertension, and 39 per cent diabetes.
These figures highlight the urgent need for community-based initiatives that encourage healthier lifestyles.
The Kuching Dharma Ling Sin Sect, which oversees the society, emphasises values of self-cultivation, self-help, good deeds, and merit.
These principles are seen as vital not only for personal growth but also for strengthening the collective spirit of Sarawak nation building.
The Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Dr Sim Kui Hian, who also serves as Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, praised the society’s contribution to community health and cohesion.
He noted that fostering a healthy population across all backgrounds is essential for Sarawak’s future, particularly as the state navigates challenges posed by modern lifestyles and ageing demographics.
The event also showcased the role of cultural organisations in bridging tradition with contemporary needs.
By integrating physical practices such as Qi Gong and aerobics with spiritual teachings, the society provides a holistic approach to wellbeing.
This blend of health awareness and cultural identity reflects Sarawak’s broader vision of inclusivity and resilience.
Community leaders and participants highlighted that the society’s activities go beyond religious practice, offering a platform for unity across different communities.
The focus on health, discipline, and mindfulness resonates strongly in today’s fast-paced environment, reinforcing the importance of collective responsibility in shaping a healthier Sarawak.
As the Fo Fa Ling Xian Zong Meditation Society looks ahead, its mission remains rooted in promoting wellness and moral values.
The anniversary celebrations served as a reminder that cultural organisations can play a pivotal role in addressing public health challenges while nurturing social harmony.
