PUTRAJAYA – Malaysia welcomed the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman, on Monday morning as he began a two-day official visit to the country.
The occasion marked his first overseas engagement since assuming office in February 2026, underscoring the importance of Malaysia in Bangladesh’s diplomatic priorities. The arrival ceremony at Perdana Putra was conducted with full honours.
Tarique Rahman and his delegation were greeted with a guard of honour inspection, featuring 105 personnel and three officers from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment under the command of Major Nur Ahmad Zaim Zahari.
The formalities reflected Malaysia’s tradition of extending respect to visiting leaders while highlighting the significance of the bilateral relationship.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed appreciation for Tarique Rahman’s decision to select Malaysia as his first official destination abroad.
He noted that the choice demonstrated the depth of trust and friendship between the two nations, which have maintained strong ties for decades through trade, labour cooperation, and cultural exchange.
“This reflects the close relationship of friendship and trust that has long existed between Malaysia and Bangladesh, as well as being a very meaningful honour for our country,” Anwar said.
The visit is expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Both governments have previously emphasised collaboration in economic development, education, and technology, alongside shared commitments to regional stability.
Malaysia hosts a significant Bangladeshi community, particularly in the labour sector, and the visit is anticipated to reinforce discussions on workforce management, welfare, and future opportunities for skilled migration.
Observers note that the timing of the visit is particularly important. Bangladesh has recently undergone political transition, with Tarique Rahman taking office earlier this year.
His decision to travel to Malaysia first signals Dhaka’s intention to deepen ties with Southeast Asia, a region increasingly vital to Bangladesh’s economic and strategic outlook.
Malaysia, meanwhile, continues to expand its role as a partner in South Asia, with bilateral trade and investment steadily growing.
Beyond economic matters, the visit also carries symbolic weight. Malaysia and Bangladesh share historical links through the Commonwealth and have often collaborated in international forums such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The official engagements in Putrajaya are expected to reaffirm these shared values while opening new avenues for cooperation in sustainable development and regional diplomacy.
The two-day programme will include high-level meetings, discussions on bilateral agreements, and opportunities to explore future partnerships.
Both sides have expressed confidence that the visit will pave the way for stronger collaboration and reinforce the longstanding friendship between Malaysia and Bangladesh.
