Sarawak Aims For 60 Pct Rice Sufficiency Via New Tech

MIRI – A transformative agricultural initiative has been unveiled with the ambitious goal of tripling local rice production within the coming years. State leadership believes this innovation could eventually position Sarawak as a net exporter of the staple grain to regional markets.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg announced a target to raise self-sufficiency from the current 21 per cent to 60 per cent. This milestone relies heavily on the commercialisation of perennial rice technology developed over two decades of research.

The breakthrough emerged from collaboration between Yunnan University and Borneoland Paddy Sdn Bhd. Unlike traditional varieties, these plants regenerate after harvesting without requiring replanting, potentially cutting cultivation costs by half.

Speaking at the Kuala Baram Harvesting Ceremony on Wednesday, the Premier highlighted the strategic importance of this development. He noted that whilst current output meets only a fraction of demand, new methods combined with available peatland could achieve full sufficiency.

Annual rice consumption in Sarawak stands at approximately 240,000 metric tonnes. Increasing domestic output is therefore critical for reducing import dependency and enhancing long-term food security resilience against global supply disruptions.

Current trials demonstrate capacity for two harvests annually under existing conditions. Researchers anticipate additional production cycles may become feasible as agronomic knowledge advances through continued study and field adaptation.

Yield projections estimate 14.5 metric tonnes per hectare yearly from perennial varieties. Such productivity levels represent significant improvements over conventional farming practices prevalent across much of the state today.

This pilot project marks Malaysia’s first successful cultivation of regenerative rice at commercial scale. Its achievement signals a major shift towards modernised agriculture capable of addressing structural limitations in domestic food systems.

A dedicated research centre will be established on 24 acres in Kuala Baram through partnership between Borneoland Paddy, LCDA, and relevant ministries. Plans exist to expand this facility to 50 acres as programmes mature.

The facility will investigate varietal performance, soil interactions, and optimised cultivation protocols. Integration of artificial intelligence and data analytics aims to enhance crop resilience and maximise resource efficiency systematically.

Several districts have been identified for future expansion including Limbang, Lawas, Gedong, Lingga, Sebuyau, Simunjan, Daro, Jemoreng, and Lundu. These areas possess suitable agro-ecological conditions for scaling perennial rice adoption.

An anchor company model will facilitate smallholder participation whilst ensuring market access. Farmers would cultivate crops independently but sell produce through a central entity in which LCDA holds equity stakes.

“This will provide farmers with a guaranteed market while enabling Sarawak to consolidate production for both domestic consumption and exports,” the Premier explained regarding the business framework.

Nutritional benefits accompany agronomic advantages as the variety contains lower starch content. This characteristic offers healthier dietary options aligning with growing consumer awareness about metabolic health and carbohydrate intake.

Sarawak’s extensive peatlands and favourable climate provide natural advantages for perennial rice expansion. Leveraging these assets responsibly could unlock substantial economic value whilst preserving ecological integrity through sustainable practices.

During the ceremony, the Premier personally harvested crops to symbolise governmental commitment to agricultural transformation. His hands-on participation underscored the priority placed on strengthening food sovereignty through technological innovation.

Long-term visions extend beyond mere sufficiency towards export competitiveness. Surplus production would generate revenue streams whilst contributing to regional food stability amid increasing geopolitical uncertainties affecting trade flows.

Research partnerships with international institutions bring global expertise to local challenges. Knowledge transfer accelerates adaptation of proven technologies to unique Sarawakian environmental and socioeconomic contexts.

Smallholder integration ensures inclusive growth rather than corporate-dominated monocultures. Equity participation models align incentives between private enterprise and rural communities dependent on agriculture for livelihoods.

Digital agriculture components position Sarawak at forefront of smart farming adoption regionally. Data-driven decision making enhances precision and reduces waste throughout production value chains significantly.

Food security remains foundational to broader economic development strategies. Reliable domestic supply buffers against external shocks whilst freeing fiscal resources for other developmental priorities requiring investment.

Ultimately, perennial rice represents more than agronomic novelty; it embodies strategic reimagining of Sarawak’s agricultural future. Success depends on sustained commitment from government, industry, and farming communities working collaboratively towards shared prosperity goals.
