PUTRAJAYA – Malaysia and Bangladesh have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation through the ASEAN framework, with a particular focus on addressing the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis.
At a joint press conference, both governments agreed to intensify engagement with Myanmar authorities and other stakeholders to tackle the root causes of displacement while mitigating the humanitarian consequences that continue to affect the region.
The move reflects a shared determination to pursue a sustainable and comprehensive solution to one of Southeast Asia’s most pressing challenges.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted the importance of collective action, noting that ASEAN remains a vital platform for dialogue and coordination in managing regional humanitarian issues.
He stressed that Malaysia values Bangladesh’s role in supporting displaced Rohingya communities and reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to ensuring safe and dignified repatriation efforts.
The discussions also extended to global concerns, where both countries expressed a firm stance on the plight of Palestinians.
They condemned the ongoing violence in Gaza, attributing it to the actions of the Israeli Zionist regime, and underscored the urgent need to end the suffering of civilians.
The leaders further emphasised the importance of diplomacy and dialogue in easing tensions in the Gulf region, particularly those involving Iran, while calling for lasting peace through international cooperation.
In addition to political and humanitarian issues, the meeting witnessed the exchange of several agreements aimed at deepening bilateral ties.
These included a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cultural cooperation and two Exchanges of Notes (EoN) covering anti-terrorism research and investment facilitation.
The agreements reflect a mutual commitment to building closer, dynamic, and mutually beneficial relations for the prosperity of both nations.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described the outcome as a step forward in expanding Malaysia-Bangladesh relations, ensuring that cooperation extends beyond immediate challenges to encompass long-term development and cultural exchange.
The joint initiatives highlight the growing partnership between Malaysia and Bangladesh, reinforcing their shared vision of regional stability, humanitarian responsibility, and economic progress.
