MIRI – The Magistrate’s Court in Miri has handed down separate sentences to two individuals involved in online gambling activities, underscoring police efforts to curb illegal gambling in the district.
On 22 June 2026, a 28-year-old Indonesian man was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to a charge under Section 7(2) of the Open Gambling Houses Act 1953.
The offence was committed on 15 June at around 9.00 pm at premises in Taman Gilbert, Miri. Police from the Criminal Investigation Division of Miri District Headquarters, led by an inspector, conducted a surprise inspection at the location.
During the operation, officers seized a VIVO mobile phone used for gambling purposes and RM110 in cash. The accused was subsequently brought before the court, where he admitted to the charge.
In a separate case, a 33-year-old local woman was fined RM2,500 after pleading guilty to the same offence.
She was arrested on 18 June at 2.35 pm for selling online gambling top-ups, commonly referred to as JOL. An OPPO mobile phone and RM152 in cash were confiscated during her arrest.
The Miri District Police Chief highlighted that these convictions reflect the ongoing commitment of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to combat illegal gambling activities in the district.
He stressed that enforcement operations will continue to target both physical and online gambling networks.
Authorities have reminded the public that gambling, whether conducted in person or through digital platforms, remains a serious offence under Malaysian law.
Police have warned that strict action will be taken against offenders without compromise, as such activities undermine community safety and social wellbeing.
The recent cases illustrate the growing challenge of online gambling, which has become more accessible through mobile devices and digital payment systems.
Enforcement agencies are stepping up surveillance and raids to dismantle these operations, while courts continue to impose penalties to deter offenders.
Community leaders in Miri have also voiced concerns about the impact of gambling on families and youth, urging residents to avoid involvement in such activities.
The police have reiterated their call for public cooperation, encouraging individuals to report suspicious gambling operations to ensure swift enforcement.
These convictions serve as a reminder that gambling-related offences carry serious consequences, including imprisonment and heavy fines.
