Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, said the initiative is part of the state’s broader transformation agenda under PCDS 2030.

He explained that the expansion will not only improve accessibility but also strengthen infrastructure for communities in Kapit, Baram, Lawas, Limbang and Sri Aman.

“In Kapit alone, more than 1,000 kilometres are being developed, while Baram accounts for over 2,000 kilometres. Together with other districts, the total reaches 5,700 kilometres,” he said, noting the scale of the project.

The Premier highlighted that the initiative will also support Sarawak’s carbon trading ambitions by preserving forest resources and aligning with international climate commitments.

He stressed that infrastructure development must go hand in hand with environmental responsibility, ensuring that growth remains sustainable.

Public Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed that two project packages worth RM58 million and RM93 million have been approved to strengthen road networks in Kapit.

He added that bridge construction will further enhance connectivity, linking communities across rivers and supporting the creation of green townships.

The announcement was made during the Sarawakku Sayang Programme (SKS) 2026 for Kapit’s elderly residents, underscoring the government’s commitment to inclusive development.

The Premier emphasised that infrastructure projects must serve both economic and social needs, providing better access to healthcare, education and welfare services.

Senior leaders including Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, alongside Cabinet members and officials from the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA), attended the event.

Their presence reinforced the government’s united approach to delivering large-scale projects across the state.

The Premier also noted that the trunk road expansion will help modernise rural areas, transforming them into thriving communities with improved facilities.

He described the initiative as a long-term investment, with structures designed to last five to ten years before requiring upgrades.

Sarawak’s infrastructure push is expected to stimulate economic activity, attract investment and improve quality of life for residents.

By extending the trunk road network, the government aims to ensure that even remote areas benefit from development, reducing disparities and fostering balanced growth across the state.
