KAPIT – The Sarawak government has unveiled plans to establish a dedicated village for Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) veterans in Kapit, recognising their contributions and sacrifices to the nation.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg confirmed that land has already been identified for the project.
He explained that the settlement will be developed into a planned community, providing housing and facilities for veterans who have purchased land in the area.
“We have approved an area for veterans who have served as military personnel. They have purchased land in the area, and we will develop houses and a special village for military veterans,” he said.
The Premier made the announcement after visiting Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Baru Kapit and the Kapit Old Airport site.
He added that the proposal will be submitted to the State Planning Council for further review, ensuring the project can move forward in line with Sarawak’s development agenda.
Abang Johari stressed that the initiative reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting the welfare of former military personnel.
“With this visit, I can personally see the condition of the area, and we will take this proposal to the next stage to be realised,” he said.
In addition to the veterans’ village, the premier revealed that the site of the former Kapit Old Airport will also be redeveloped as part of a wider plan to modernise Kapit town.
The project will include new infrastructure, resettlement of residents to safer areas less prone to flooding, and the creation of a sustainable urban environment.
The transformation is expected to reshape Kapit into a more organised and liveable town, aligning with Sarawak’s long-term vision for balanced development.
The government aims to combine modern facilities with community-focused planning, ensuring that residents benefit from improved safety, comfort, and quality of life.
Observers note that the proposed veterans’ village complements Sarawak’s broader development strategy, which emphasises inclusivity and social responsibility.
By providing dedicated housing for former military personnel, the state is reinforcing its recognition of their service while simultaneously advancing urban renewal in Kapit.
The redevelopment of Kapit, including the veterans’ settlement and the airport site, is anticipated to strengthen the division’s role in Sarawak’s growth trajectory, making it a model for sustainable and community-orientated development.
