KUCHING: Data is now emerging as the new “oil”, becoming a key driver of global economic growth, especially in the fast-growing fields of technology and digital innovation.
Sarawak Premier Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Openg said that while traditional resources such as oil, natural gas and other hydrocarbons remain important to the economy, the world is clearly shifting towards data as a critical asset for the future.
He explained that data is now powering modern industries, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and advanced digital systems. However, he stressed that data alone is not enough; it must be properly stored and managed to create real economic value. In this context, global companies such as Western Digital play an important role by providing advanced storage solutions for massive amounts of digital information.
The Premier made these remarks during the launch of “New Horizons for WD Sarawak” at the Samalaju Free Industrial Zone on Thursday. The event marked another milestone in Sarawak’s efforts to position itself as a regional hub for high-tech manufacturing and digital infrastructure.
He further highlighted that Sarawak is well-positioned to attract data-related industries due to its natural advantages. The state has stable energy resources, strong water supply, and strategic industrial zones, all of which are essential for operating modern data storage facilities and high-performance technology plants.
During the event, a new facility producing advanced “substrate glass” technology was also launched. This material is considered highly important in the global data storage industry as it can withstand high temperature conditions while maintaining data integrity. The Premier noted that this represents one of the latest technologies being adopted worldwide, and Sarawak’s involvement reflects growing international confidence in the state’s industrial capabilities.
Also present at the ceremony were Sarawak Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, alongside senior government officials and industry leaders. Representatives from energy and industrial sectors, including Sarawak Energy Berhad and PETROS, also attended the event.
Looking ahead, Sarawak continues to strengthen its position in both traditional energy and emerging digital sectors. The integration of data-driven industries is expected to complement existing resources and support long-term economic transformation. Leaders believe this balanced approach will ensure sustainable growth and keep Sarawak competitive in the evolving global economy.
